I say don’t believe the hype about the KDP Select Program.
People have a tendency to exaggerate about things, both in the negative and the
affirmative. KDP Select is an Amazon Program designed to provide more
visibility to newly published, as well as existing book titles. Unfortunately
for them, the relatively few authors that succeed in the program right away
have been the source of a lot of hype.
On the other hand, the more numerous authors who have thrown
in the towel and given up on the program (sometimes prematurely) have added
their own form of hype, but only in the reverse. It is not unusual to find
authors with newly published titles, talking negatively about the KDP Select
Program. But is all the hype, either for or against the program really
justified? As a new author with your own published book to promote, should you
believe the hype about KDP Select?
Why Do Authors
Complain?
Probably the biggest issue or complaint that many authors
seem to have with the KDP Select Program is the fact that Amazon requires
exclusive distribution rights for all titles enrolled in the program for a
period of 90 days. During that time, an author’s digital book is bound
exclusively to Amazon Kindle’s Select Program, and authors are not allowed to
sell the digital version anywhere else online.
While there are those authors who feel like this is a form
of holding their titles hostage, they have to accept the fact that those are
the terms that they agree to up front. Just because they don’t begin to get the
results they hoped for is no reason to withdraw from the program and expect to
side-step the contract.
Your Book’s
Performance
As for your book’s performance and overall success, authors
cannot expect to receive the same results from the program as another author.
It is true, that some books do quite well, once they enroll in the KDP Select
Program, but there may be a number of variables that are different from your
own particular book and situation. When and if you decide to enroll your book
in KDP Select, the best thing you can do for yourself is visit Amazon’s website
and read all the details and fine print about the program. Don’t make your
decision based on a rumor or what you heard from others. Make an informed
decision based on facts from the KDP website.
The main thing to remember about signing up for the KDP
Select Program is that when you agree to join, you are entering into a
contractual agreement. The moment you sign on the figurative dotted line, you
are committed to those terms. Even if you choose to remove your book before the
90 days are up, you are still bound to the contract. You will not be able to
sell the digital version of your book until the contract period expires. With that
point in mind, make sure you get all the facts before deciding to join KDP
Select, and don’t believe the hype, either for or against the program.
